about

This song was inspired by learning how to ice skate at Campus Martius in Detroit

lyrics

A smooth sheet of white blankets these prairies
as twisted leaves tremble on skeleton trees.
The cottony grey sky rolls on and on,
this barren land’s a desert of cold.

Kingbirds and warblers have ceased their songs
and long since flown to southern lands.
All the air is still and all I hear is
crunching of snow beneath my feet.

I’ve grown accustomed to these woolen socks,
these cotton layers are like my skin.
As I glide across these frozen ponds
the winter’s beauty is slowly revealed.

When the Worm Moon rises and the ground thaws
and birds return to sing their songs,
I won’t be ready to hang up these skates-
I’ve learned to love this desert of cold.
